The range
Eleven oils, by the job they do.
Filter by use, or search an approval such as MTU, CK-4 or ISO 11158. Switch to the table to compare typical properties side by side.
All 11 oils
Marine engine oils
Medium-speed trunk-piston engines on distillate, plus gearboxes, clutches and stern tubes.
Heavy-duty diesel engine oils
High-speed diesels: main engines, generators, tenders and workboats.
Hydraulic fluids
Steering, cranes, davits, passerelles and deck machinery.
Compressor oils
Rotary screw and vane air compressors; ABB VTR turbochargers.
Turbine oils
Steam and light gas turbines, turbo-compressors and R&O systems.
Outboard oils
Two-stroke petrol outboards, premix or oil injection.
Passenger-car engine oils
Crew and shore vehicles. Not marine products.
Viscosity
Where each oil sits on the scale.
Engine oils are graded by viscosity at 100 °C (SAE J300). Hydraulic, compressor and turbine oils are graded at 40 °C (ISO 3448). Values are Shell's typical figures.
Engine oils, SAE J300
Hot-side grade bands by kinematic viscosity at 100 °C.
Industrial oils, ISO VG
Each ISO grade is its mid-point viscosity at 40 °C, ±10 %.

What 15W-40 actually means.
A multigrade oil meets one cold (W) grade and one hot grade. The full guide covers SAE, ISO VG, base number, API categories, base-oil groups and TC-W3.
15W: the cold sideCranking viscosity at most 7,000 mPa·s at −20 °C, and pumpable at −25 °C.
40: the hot sideKinematic viscosity from 12.5 to under 16.3 mm²/s at 100 °C, with a high-temperature, high-shear floor.
ISO VG 68
Mid-point kinematic viscosity at 40 °C: 61.2 to 74.8 mm²/s. It says nothing about performance; HM, HV or L-DAJ does.
BN 12
Base number in mg KOH/g: the reserve that neutralises combustion acids from sulphur in the fuel. Shell scales it to fuel sulphur.
API CK-4
The current heavy-duty diesel category, backward compatible with CJ-4, CI-4 and CH-4. API CF is obsolete for most engines built after 2009.
