- Medium- and heavy-duty diesels on low- or medium-sulphur diesel, including stop-start work
- Non-turbocharged engines
- Transmissions and mobile hydraulics where the maker calls for a monograde engine oil
- Most diesel engines built after 2009: API lists the CF category as obsolete for them. Follow the engine manual.
