Low-sulphur gasoil and the sulphur rules.

What we supply, how the ISO 8217 distillate grades compare, and which sulphur limit applies where you are heading.

What we supply

We supply one product: ultra-low sulphur gasoil, with sulphur below 0.20 %. It is delivered ship-to-ship by our own vessel, at the dock or at anchor.

ISO 8217 no longer sets a sulphur figure for each grade. The buyer states the limit the fuel must meet, so tell us the limit you need when you request.

Sulphur limits

Since 1 March 2020 a ship may not even carry fuel above 0.50 % for use, unless it has an approved equivalent such as a scrubber.

Heading west? The US Caribbean Sea ECA, around Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, starts roughly 45 to 50 nautical miles west of Sint Maarten. Our gasoil is not for use inside it: change over to fuel at 0.10 % or below before you cross the boundary.

Our gasoil is below 0.20 %, within the 0.50 % global limit.

ISO 8217:2024 distillate grades

The 2024 edition added DF grades, which may contain biodiesel (FAME) up to 100 %. The DM grades are expected to contain FAME only at a trace level, about 0.5 %. Trade names such as MGO or ULSD are labels, not specifications: ask for the grade and its limits.

Litres to tonnes

Delivery notes state quantity in metric tonnes. For a quick estimate from litres:

An estimate: tonnes = litres × density ÷ 1,000,000. The delivery note uses the measured density and temperature-corrected volume.

Sint Maarten and Annex VI

IMO's treaty status list shows MARPOL Annex VI, the annex on fuel sulphur, as not applying to Sint Maarten as a jurisdiction. Yachts flagged in countries that apply Annex VI still carry its rules with them, including the sulphur limits, the delivery note and the fuel sample. We supply both with every delivery.
